A family is a social group where Everyone has
different responsibilities and roles to play within that group in order for that
family to survive. As Vikings often lived in extended families the family
structure also therefore helped to shape the larger Viking society and for it to
function/work as a whole.
Everyone helped and supported one another so if everyone did their job
properly then the family would survive and do well. Life was really hard in
Viking days - a constant battle against difficult natural conditions- to get
crops to grow and raise animals for food. If everyone In the family worked
together then they would be more successful.
Fathers and mothers taught their children the
life skills they would need to survive and prosper when they were
adults.
In times of trouble the family would be a place
of safety and refuge where an individual could expect to be supported, protected
and looked after.
In Viking days the reputation of the family was
very important. The Viking was very happy to think his name and that of his
family would be remembered through time because of the good things they had
done.
The most important things in family life have not
changed a lot since Viking times. In a family you can depend on being loved and
supported. It is just as important now to have this as it was in Viking
days.
